Helping homeowners keep their homes and resolve disputes with their lenders is fascinating, challenging, and gratifying work. This seminar will survey the many ways that attorneys and housing counselors can assist homeowners facing foreclosure. However, in addition to foreclosure defense, it will present practical and inspiring information about litigating consumer protection cases to recover significant money damage where a mortgage lender has done something fraudulent, abusive, or discriminatory.
Preserving and increasing the percentage of Oregonian homeowners is a timely and compelling goal, as the Oregon Legislature recently committed to increasing the percentage of state residents who own their homes. Census data shows that Oregon currently ranks 39th among the states in homeownership, and we continue to confront a significant racial homeownership gap: while a majority of white Oregonians are homeowners, a much smaller share of Black, Hispanic, and Native American Oregonians are homeowners. Attorneys and housing counselors are on the front lines of increasing housing equity and protecting the shelter, autonomy, and chance to build generational wealth that homeownership provides.
Our presenters for this seminar are local consumer advocates and national experts, with time between and after sessions for making connections with others who are interested in homeownership preservation. We hope that you’ll join us in learning about the range of tools that attorneys and housing counselors can use to promote and protect homeownership.
