While racial and gender based microaggressions are well documented and researched, there is less literature on the effects of religious microaggressions. In times of heightened divide in our country, keeping in mind Oregon’s myriad cultures and backgrounds is an important factor in the legal profession. This CLE presentation focuses on several themes (borrowed from the field of psychotherapy) that affect the client relationship: minimization/avoidance of religious issues, assumptions of religious homogeneity, pathologizing religion, and prioritization of one’s religious beliefs. While religious discrimination in the workplace is not specifically addressed, that theme may emerge while exploring these topics.
The CLE learning objective is increase awareness of how religion affects legal professionals, clients, and the public. For example, being aware of religious holiday observances can go far in reducing feelings of isolation and disconnection with colleagues and clients. Join a panel discussion moderated by OSB President Myah Kehoe on how religious belief impacts professional and personal communities and relationships. Our engaging panelists are OSB Diversity & Inclusion Director JB Kim, Mark Duntley, Dean Emeritus of Spiritual Life at Lewis & Clark College, and Professor Khalil Zonoozy, College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Senior Scholar in Residence at Portland State University.
Please note that it may take up to 30 days after you complete this seminar for it to appear on your online MCLE Compliance Report at www.osbar.org.
