There are now over 1.5 million nonprofits in the US and over 21,000 charities registered in Oregon. The Urban Institute reports that roughly 25% of adults volunteered with a nonprofit in 2014. Chances are you will encounter nonprofit issues in your professional and personal life. Learning the fundamentals of nonprofits will help you in either arena. This overview of nonprofit law, including assessing whether to form a nonprofit, what type of nonprofit to form, how to obtain tax-exempt status, the regulatory oversight of nonprofits, handling restricted gifts, and how nonprofits can engage in lobbying and political activity, will provide invaluable information whether you are advising nonprofits, advising donors, or serving on a nonprofit board. Ethical issues attorneys face in representing nonprofits and serving on nonprofit boards will also be addressed.
